Yamaha Digital Recorders/Mixing boards

I have TWO of these for sale.

Perfect for recording at live shows and other non-studio events

They were used for the creation of AV shows requiring up to 1 hour with 4 tracks. These recorder are operate as a synchronized pair using a standard Midi cable. Each unit records 1 hour of two tracks or 1/2 hour of four tracks. They use standard Mini Disks available at Walmart, Radioshack, etc. These units are in almost new like condition, in their boxes, with manuals

History:

I purchased these units to allow me to create and edit sound tracks for my slide shows (see projector equipment below), before transfering the soundtracks to a portable 4 track tape recorder for portable playback. As things would happen, not long afterwards, I switched to digital cameras, and thus moved away from slide projectors and onto direct computer generated videos.

These two units have had 15 to 20 hours of use, sitting in my workroom, for a couple of years, and then put back in their boxes for storage. They are in excellent condition, with a few minor scratches from use, but working fine. They were checked for operation 2008.04.13. They require 120 volts, 60 Hz power, and are UL/ULc approved for both USA and Canada, imported and sold by Yamaha Music Canada Ltd., and are not gray market units, nor domestic Japanese units requiring 100 volt power.

Included with the units, in addition to the boxes and full set of manuals, both in English and French, I have included 10 four track data disks, 6 of which have never been opened, and a MIDI cable that connected between the two units allowing one to be master the other the slave, so they stay completely sync'd with each other.

These are some photos taken of the actual units, both are powered up as I was testing them.

Description (from Yamaha's website)

Quality, Flexibility, Ease of Use.
The MD4S Offers That and More.

The MD4S by Yamaha preserves your musical creations with the superior audio quality and creative flexibility of digital based multi-track performance. Its MD (MiniDisc) format provides audio quality on par with CDs, to retain every recorded note in its original condition. Unlike analog media, there’s no added hiss or noise so you’ll hear the same outstanding audio quality every time.
Getting your music into the MD4S is simple. Just connect your equipment, press Record and go. When all four tracks are full, its flexible editing system allows for unlimited ping-ponging of tracks, without signal degradation, to free up space for additional recording. Other editing features and non-linear access make editing and polishing your creations a breeze.
The MD4S, it sounds great and it will make you sound great too.

Features

Superior Audio Quality

The MD format offers superior audio quality with a full range frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz and a sampling rate of 44.1kHz. That's audio quality on par with CDs. MDs are also extremely durable, highly reliable and virtually unaffected by external magnetic fields. That means you'll get the same crystal clear sound time and time again.

Ping-Pong

Unlimited Ping-Pong without Degradation

When it comes time to ping-pong tracks the MD4S shines. Digital technology allows you to mix all four tracks down to one or two tracks without signal degradation. Record more material and repeat the process as much as necessary.

Easy Operation

Panel controls have an intuitive feel and offer direct and immediate access to record, playback and editing functions. The large Jog/Shuttle, used in conjunction with Edit, Utility and other menus provides quick access to specific functions. It also lets you playback at 1/2 speed (great for transcribing) or fast forward/rewind at various speeds from 2X to 32X.

Four-Channel Full Inline Mixer

The 4-channel full inline mixer is designed for great sound and flexibility in recording. All four channels are equipped with phone inputs with channels 1 and 2 incorporating combination XLR/phone balanced inputs as well as insert I/O jacks. Each channel features a 3-band EQ section along with variable gain, pan, fader and two AUX sends that can be returned to the mixer via stereo channels 5/6 and 7/8. Monitor your work with headphones or external speakers connected to the Monitor Out jacks. Direct outputs are also available for each recorder track for additional sound processing externally.

Practical Storage Media

MD
MD Data disks are durable and reliable.

The MD4S uses MD Data disks for 4-track recording, however, standard stereo Mini Discs can be used for playback and recording of stereo audio. One MD Data disk provides enough space for 37 minutes of 4-track recording, 74 minutes of stereo recording or 148 minutes of mono recording. The MD4S can also playback and record standard Mini Discs including the playback of commercially pre-recorded discs and those recorded on consumer type MD recorders. MD's also offer practical storage. No need for external storage devices or costly media and their compact size makes them easy to store.

Compatibility with MIDI Devices

A single MIDI cable provides access to an array of options for connecting the MD4S to other devices. Compatibility with MIDI Time Code (MTC), MIDI Machine Control (MMC) and MIDI External Sync lets you smoothly integrate the MD4S into your studio system. MTC allows the MD4S to be the sync master or slave of other MTC devices. External sync by MIDI Clock is also possible using MIDI Tempo Map function. Devices supporting MIDI Song Position Pointer can be synchronized even from the middle of the song by this method. MMC devices can be used to control the record and playback functions of the MD4S. When you're ready to expand, you can connect two MD4S's together for 8-track recording or connect the MD4S to an MD8 for 12-track recording.

High-End Editing Functions and Non-Linear Access

The MD4S’s non-linear environment offers quick operation and flexible editing. Copy a part of a track from one song and paste it into another. When punching in, the Multi Take function lets you record several takes and select the best take after auditioning each one.
Fast and accurate Search and Locate operations feature settings for Start and Stop plus up to 10 markers per song with an accuracy of one frame (11.6 milliseconds). Other editing features allow you to make a backup copy of your song before you begin editing, divide a song into independent songs or combine once divided songs into a single song. You can also create a Cue List to rearrange a song into a completely different version. Likewise, the Program Playback function lets you rearrange the order of songs for playback.

Part Copy

The Part Copy function lets you copy a section from onetrack to a different section in a different track.

Part Copy

Setting Up A Cue List

The Cue List Playback function lets you compile markers info a list of steps, or “cues”,for playback in a sequence. Since each cue can be set and executed with a precision of approximately 1/87 of a second, the MD4S provides instant, seamless playback of each consecutive step in the sequence, thus letting you create a completely different arrangement of a song.

Setting Up A Cue List

Setting up a Cue List is easy. First you assign markers to specific points in the song. Next you designate start and end maker numbers for each step, along with how many times each step should repeat. Then you’re ready to bear your new arrangement!
